St. Bees to Ennerdale Bridge 14 miles/23 km Many people dip their toe in the Irish Sea at St. Bees, pick up a pebble and complete the walk in the same fashion at Robin Hood's Bay depositing the pebble. The great Coast to Coast walk starts at St. Bees, leaving views of the Isle Of Man behind to head out along the Red Cliffs which offer an excellent opportunity to view the bird life at the nature reserve. The first days walking to Ennerdale Bridge offers a glimpse of the diversity of the path to come with forests, valleys, streams and excellent views from the top of Dent Fell towards the mountainous Lake District as you descend towards your second nights accommodation at the quaint hamlet of Ennerdale Bridge.

Ennerdale Bridge to Borrowdale 15 miles/24 km
There is no main stop for lunch today so be sure to pack a sandwich before walking out to the east following the lovely shore of Ennerdale Water and its surrounding views of the mountains. Passing streams and walking along the easier forestry track, the first serious days walking calls for a steep ascent up Loft Beck with the far reaching views to Buttermere, making the hike worthwhile. Descend down the old tramway leading to the Honister Slate Mine, which offers daily tours. Then down into Borrowdale and its beautiful valley views to accommodation at Rosthwaite.

Borrowdale to Grasmere 9 miles/14 km

Today's walking offers rich views of classical lakeland scenery. Heading out of Rosthwaite through the valley of Stonethwaite and onto a gradual ascent up to Greenup Gill and on further to Lining Crag. An alternative is to take the higher route to Helm Crag, on fair weather days this is a good option before meeting just outside quaint Grasmere, a great place for your third nights accommodation. William Wordsworth's home from 1799 to 1808 at Dove Cottage in Grasmere is now the home of the Wordsworth Museum and art gallery. Grasmere is where he wrote a huge amount of his poetry and his notoriety has made lovely Grasmere a popular tourist destination.

Grasmere to Patterdale 8 miles/13 km

An ascent to Grisedale House and then a low level option through the Valley of Grisedale makes for picturesque walking through teeming meadows filled with flora and a joyous walk down to Patterdale. A more strenuous and serious path that should be undertaken with care but possibly a highlight of the Coast to Coast would be to take the high level route carrying on from Grisedale Tarn following Dollywagon Pike to the magnificent Helvellyn and the descent to picturesque Glenridding (add 2 miles for this route). Another option is to take the route over St. Sunday Crag with views of Ullswater (add 1.5 miles for this route) and on to Patterdale, a peaceful unspoilt village sitting at the southern end of lake Ullswater. Enjoy a cruise on the water to complete the day.

Patterdale to Shap 16 miles/26 km

Today offers the last of the great majestic Lake District views. The most challenging section so far, today demands the highest climb, coupled with long miles. Take a picnic as opportunities are rare. Glorious views across the valley are ahead leaving Patterdale and climbing Boredale Hause. Head around the Knott before beginning the climb of Kidsty Pike 770m and the last of the great peaks of the Lake District. A good detour after Kidsty Pike takes you around the southern end of Haweswater Reservoir and is easier going than the northern route and allows you to sample the excellent food at the prestigious Haweswater Hotel. This is followed by Burbanks and then a pleasant route past the River Lowther and the remains of Shap Abbey before reaching the village of Shap.

Shap to Kirkby Stephen 21 miles/34 km

Kirkby Stephen can be used as a swapover for people wanting to split the Coast To Coast Walk in two and can be the finish for people who want to resume the next section of the walk another time.
Starting the walk today feels like starting a new chapter as you venture over the moors, a more undulating landscape resumes in sharp contrast to the dramatic mountain ranges of the Lake District. The new views include ancient stone sites with Oddendale Stone Circle and the rumoured site of Robin Hood 's grave. A 1.5 mile detour takes in the pleasant village of Orton, which offers the only refreshment on todays walk visiting a renowned cake and chocolates shop at Kennedy's. Crossing a river and climbing Smardale Fell affords great views before heading into Kirkby Stephen with great facilities and your nights accommodation.

Kirby Stephen to Keld 12 miles /19km (Keld also used by Pennine Way walkers)

The start of the walk for people wanting to split the Coast To Coast walk in two.
A great days walking starts with a river walk and lovely views of Franks Bridge before heading up into the hills of the Yorkshire Dales and the much anticipated nine stone cairns that were glimpsed in the distance yesterday. Nine Standards Rigg, offers the most majestic views in every direction. It is not known why the nine standards are placed here, speculation is that they are boundary markers. Diversions are often made to help preserve the paths in this area and depending on the time of year, it can become boggy so the route and detours are sometimes weather dependant. Whitsundale Beck area offers a great stretch of walking before entering the quaint village of Keld.

Keld to Reeth 11 miles/18 km

We take the low level route along the picturesque River Swale and the beautiful valley area of Swaledale. The trail passes through pretty villages, offering good walking and good meal alternatives at various pubs and tea rooms along the path. The village of Reeth is our night's accommodation, this attractive village is at the heart of Swaledale and offers good facilities.

Reeth to Richmond 11 miles/18km

A great days walking with time at the end of the day to enjoy lovely Richmond. The walk enjoys views of the river Swale, pleasant woodland strolls, passing quaint villages and meadows packed with wild flowers in the spring and summer months, culminating in excellent views descending into Richmond. Richmond is a market town with an elegant castle and a rich history, meandering the cobbled streets is a delight making Richmond an excellent base for our nights accommodation.

Richmond to Ingleby Cross or Osmotherley 23 miles/37 km

We start the walk leaving excellent views of Richmond Castle behind as we walk along the River Swale. Meandering the country lanes and mostly flat sometimes muddy farmland towards Danby Wiske and then onwards to the small village of Ingleby Cross or depending on accommodation to the lovely village of Osmotherley.

Ingleby Cross to Clay Bank Top 9 miles/14 km

There are many ascents and descents on this section of the Coast To Coast dipping slightly into a section of the Cleveland Way as we venture across the panoramic North Yorkshire Moors. This hilly section offers woodland walks with excellent flora, the lovely valley of Scugdale and the largest expanse of moorland in England making it a remarkable yet tiresome section of the path. Accommodation is just past Clay Bank Top at Great Broughton.

Clay Bank Top to Glaisdale/Grosmont 23 miles/38 km
An uphill climb to Urra Moor starts the day and good walking along a disused railway to Blakey. Continuing over beautiful moorland that is covered in a purple haze of heather in the summer months. Walking through valleys and woodland with glimpses of the North Sea and your journeys end ahead. The walk continues along Glaisdale Rigg with stunning views of the valleys below before descending into the valley and the village of Glaisdale. Depending on accommodation we may venture on an easy walk along the River Esk to the village of Grosmont featuring the pretty train station in the film Harry Potter.

Glaisdale/Grosmont to Robin Hoods Bay 19 miles/29 km

The day begins with a steep ascent out of the valley and back onto the lush moorland following May Beck and the wonderful walk to Little Beck. We past an 18th century Hermitage and a 20 metre waterfall before becoming close enough to smell the sea along the last stretch of this outstanding achievement that is the Coast To Coast path. The final clifftop section offers fantastic views out towards the North Sea and will spur you onwards down into Robin Hood's Bay. Deposit your pebble and dip your toe at the sea shore before exploring the quaint winding cobbled lanes and cottages that cling to the steep slopes of Robin Hood's Bay and enjoy your last nights accommodation.
Please be aware that slight variations to this itinerary may have to be made due to availability of accommodation.
